Outbreak of Meningitis On the Decrease - Minister

Ahmed Mohammed

Bauchi — The Minister of State for Health, Dr Muhammed Ali Pate, has said that the outbreak of meningitis has reduced in the country.

Dr Pate, who stated this at a stake holder's consultative meeting yesterday in Bauchi, said, "Nigeria recorded less than 1,000 cases of meningitis this year. When compared to the past, we will notice a reduction because two years ago, we recorded 50,000 cases".

He said plans are under way by the Federal Government to increase the number of community health workers in the North-east and North-west geo political zones to improve health care delivery to pregnant women. This according to him is because the two zones have the highest maternal mortality rate in the country.
